Faiz Al-Sarraj, head of the Government of National Accord in Libya, announced that he has suddenly granted his powers to his deputy, Ahmed Maitiq, causing ambiguity and controversy. Sarraj then left the capital to an unknown destination outside the country last Saturday.
Maitiq, the deputy of Al-Sarraj, has not commented on the decision, whereas the GNA refused to announce Al-Sarraj’s whereabouts and whether he intends to return or not as the ceremony of handing over power to the new President of the Presidency Council, Muhammad Al-Manf, is approaching.
Local sources indicate that “Al-Sarraj ignores Al-Manafi,”, while those close to Al-Sarraj spread the story of him undergoing surgery in Italy.
“Fayez al-Sarraj, the head of the Government of National Accord, traveled to Italy to undergo dental surgery in Rome,” that’s what the Italian news agency Nova said on Monday, citing its sources.
It is noteworthy that the UN mission announced last week the results of the voting of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum, in Geneva, on the lists of candidates for the positions of the Presidential Council and the Transitional Unity Government. The results showed that Muhammad Yunus Al-Manfi won the presidency of Council, while Abdel Hamid Dabaiba would head the government. Musa Al-Koni and, Abdullah Al-Lafi would be members of the Presidential Council.
