More than 100 members of the Tunisian house of the Representatives have signed a petition calling for withdrawing confidence from Rached al-Ghannouchi, the parliament president and the leader of the Ennahda Movement.
“The withdrawal of confidence from Ghannouchi is a matter of need to rebalance the political landscape and restore the role of institutions,” this is what Marwan Falval MP for Tahya Tounes party said.
“The petition to withdraw confidence in the first parliamentary session was an expression of the inability of the parliamentary institution to play its role,” Falval indicated.
The first voting of withdrawal on July 30 was only able to collect 97 votes, which is not sufficient to oust the parliament president, whose number of critics increased, and who maintained his position for the second year in a five-year term ending in 2024.
During the past days, a large campaign has been launched in Parliament to withdraw confidence from Ghannouchi, and submit a recall petition that requires the signature of 73 delegates as a quorum to be deposited in Parliament for discussion.
For her part, Abeer Moussa, the opposition and the head of the Free Constitutional Party, confirmed that removing Ghannouchi from parliament and holding the organization accountable for what he did was among the most important demands of the Tunisian people, in addition to imposing a punishment on them.
Opposition sources have confirmed that 90 signatures have been collected in favor of the withdrawal of confidence, and are awaiting additional signatures before submitting the petition to the parliament office.
It is noteworthy that Tunisia is witnessing a constitutional crisis, as Hicham El-Mechichi Prime Minister failed to persuade President Qais Saeed to accept the performance of the new ministers for the constitutional oath, while the president adheres to his position.
Saeed considers that the existence of suspicions of corruption prevented 4 ministers from taking part in the ministerial formation.
